We Need Better Christians

bible-1031288_960_720I recently watched a sermon on YouTube by Dr. Johnny Pope entitled, “Bring America Back to God”. In it he said, “We don’t need better Democrats, we don’t need better Republicans, what we need are better Christians!”

He’s so right.

This was once a Christian nation. The Republic form of government given to us by our Founding Fathers was built by Godly men. Even the “Deists” like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were more Christian than many so-called Christians today.

This is no longer a Christian nation. Isn’t that what Obama said at the beginning of his first term? So far, that is the only thing I agree with him on.

It is becoming fashionable to hate on Christians. Can’t say anything negative about Muslims, Hindus, atheists, or anyone else, but Christians…well, we’re fair game. I’m not complaining. I know why this is happening. I’m just pointing it out.

Twenty years ago it was inconceivable that gay marriage would be legalized. Swear words once censored from TV are now common. Commercials that would have been categorized as porn twenty years ago are now playing every day. Video games, now played by young people, have extreme, realistic violence. We are bombarded every day by hedonistic themes on TV, computers, books, magazines, and music. And anyone who dares to speak out against the filth is immediately decried as a judgmental, holier-than-thou prig.

Today, if someone announces that they are gay, or changing their gender, the world applauds them and calls them “heroic”. But if someone says that they are saving themselves for marriage…they are looked at as though they are a two-headed goat.

I don’t know where exactly we started to slip away from being a Christian nation. Maybe when prayer was taken out of public schools? Maybe when Roe vs. Wade legalized abortions? Those definitely had a major part. We Christians were definitely asleep then.

A recurring theme I heard as a child was that Christians don’t get involved in politics because politics is dirty. You have to sell your soul to the devil in order to get things done in politics. Oh, I was definitely taught that I had a responsibility to vote. But what’s the point of voting if I’m only sending someone to represent me who is just going to sell their soul to the devil?

Christians are responsible for Roe vs. Wade. Christians are responsible for prayer being removed from public schools. Christians are even responsible for gay marriage being legalized. What? How is that possible, you ask? Because we have too long kept our “salt” and “light” out of the arena of politics. We also have come to be tolerant and accepting of sin.

Why don’t we have revivals anymore like in the days of John Wesley and George Whitefield? Or like in the days of Charles Finney, Dwight Moody, Billy Sunday? Where are the Spiritual Awakenings like in the days of Jonathan Edwards? Where are the people on Sunday morning church services? Why is football and basketball more important than being obedient to God? Why do Christians think that the Super Bowl is more important than worshiping the Lord? Why do Christian parents permit their children to play sports on the Lord’s Day instead of having them in Church learning about God and serving Him? When did church services become necessary to be entertaining?  When did it become all about “me, me, me, I want to be entertained and feel good when I leave church”? Why are we not weeping for the sins of this nation? Why are we not on our knees before the Lord humbling ourselves, praying, seeking His face, and turning from our wicked ways? (2 Chronicles 7:14) Only then will the Lord hear us, forgive us, and heal the land.

The Progressives (communists, socialists, fascists, etc.) are always trying to create a “perfect” utopia. But they leave God out of the equation. The better they try to make it the worse this world is.

Only God can heal this sick world. And He’s looking for better Christians who will “stand in the gap” and share His message of true hope and redemption.
